I met a Soldier

I met a soldier,
a soldier from England,
got his call-up papers,
first thing Monday morning,

I met a soldier,
who fought in the great war
who saw the bullets,
the shells,

He saw friends
dying near
Unable to help them,
While they were dying.

He's seen the gas bombs,
Looked through the mask,
For what reason? Why ask?
