I met a Soldier

I met a soldier,
he said his name was Godfrey,
and that all he ever wanted,
was to fight for his country.

I met a soldier,
who looked rather sad,
he said that only yesterday,
he'd been safe at home with his mum and dad.

I met a soldier,
who was fighting in the Somme,
his body was moving,
but his soul had gone.

I met a soldier,
who said to me,
that our friend Godfrey,
would no longer be.
