March 2010 Newsletter

Dear Parents

It was really good that so many of you were able to attend the recent consultation evenings. I hope the reports provided by staff gave you a good indication of your child's progress both academically and socially. Do let us know if you require any further information.

This last half term was full to the brim with events taking place such as Variety Show, Drama Production, Sports events and Quiz - a big thank you for your support.

Please remember the teaching staff have a training day on Monday the 19th April, therefore pupils do not return to school until Tuesday 20th April. We wish everyone a happy Easter and an enjoyable holiday.

Yours sincerely
Mary V. Parker
Head Teacher

Head Lice
Unfortunately, we have had some cases of head lice in school recently. Can we please request that you check your child's hair regularly and take any necessary action. Treatments are readily available from pharmacies or the 'wet combing' method is effective if you want to avoid chemicals. For further information please contact your local health centre or pharmacy. Thank you.

Variety Show
What a fantastic night! All the hard work in preparing for the show, both from the performers and the behind the scenes crew, came to fruition last Friday with a magnificent show which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. We are so lucky to live in an area with such a wealth of talent, from our own pupils and staff, former pupils and members of the local community. Special thanks go to all involved.

Drama Club
And so to our next performance:- 'The Easter Show' is almost ready to be seen and will be performed in the school hall on Tuesday 30th March at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now from the school office, adults £2.00, children free.

Haiti £2 Challenge
We have been completely overwhelmed with the response to our £2 challenge. The pupils really took the challenge to their hearts and used all their enterprise skills to raise as much money as possible by making cakes, sponsored walks, swims, silences and sleeps, car washing and many other activities. We are now very pleased to announce that the total raised is a staggering £2701.63!! A big thank you to all those who used their time and energy to take part, we are very proud of you all.

Painted Egg Competition
It is time for our annual painted egg competition, last year we had some cracking entries (!). All entries should be handed to Mrs Best by Monday 29th March. There will be an Easter Egg for the winner but every entry receives a prize.

Football
Year 7 boys beat Nidderdale convincingly to reach the next round of the District Cup. Yesterday they played a fantastic match at Knaresborough against King James' School, winning 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw going in to extra time. They are now through to the semi-finals and will be playing at home on Tuesday at 2.30pm against St Aidan's School, Harrogate. Well done lads!

2 Year 6 teams performed well at Giggleswick, winning 3 of their 4 games recently.

Cross Country
The Quarry race at Settle was a great success last Saturday in spite of the rain, with year 6 boys and girls winning the team trophies. All competitors represented the school well.
Notable achievements:-

Year 6 Boys - Charlie Ferguson 2nd and Joel Wynne 3rd
Year 6 Girls - Ellie Lambert 1st, Sophie Marshall 2nd, Tiggy Wood 3rd
Year 8 Boys - Jack Brennand 3rd, Callum Lambert 4th

Table Tennis
Family Table Tennis has been well supported on Fridays after school. This Friday is the last one.

Volley Ball
If anyone is interested in trying some Volley Ball please let Mr Atkinson know via your child. We could perhaps run a club through the summer term on Fridays 4.00pm-5.00pm.

Drum Lessons
We have a Drum teacher from the County Music Teacher coming in to school Thursdays to take lessons and he currently has vacancies for pupils. If you are interested in having drum lessons please contact the Music Service on 01609 532783.
