Information Communication Technology

Our pupils receive a thorough grounding in the use of information technology and the school is constantly developing best practise to meet the needs of our pupils in a rapidly changing technological world.

We aim to develop safe and confident users of ICT, acknowledging that they are at the forefront of technological change and must become highly proficient users of these resources that are deeply embedded in their lives.

The children are excited by the opportunities on offer to them. We have recently upgraded our ICT provision to include an upgraded specialist ICT suite with an additional two suites of wireless Netbooks, which provide both pupils and staff with an opportunity to develop their use of ICT in their own teaching areas and, more recently, outside in the school outdoor environment. The ratio of computer to pupil is nearing 1:1 as pupils take advantage of computers that are actively used in all classrooms. By investing into high quality wireless access provision, ICT as a teaching and learning tool has become more mobile and flexible.

This development has not only given rise to exciting opportunities to develop stimulating and dynamic schemes of work within the ICT department but also in subject specific areas. So whether pupils are monitoring the progress of an earthquake in Geography, linking via webcam to pupils in another country, or investigating the global E-Waste problem and writing to an MP, the prospect of future developments are gripping. Collectively the teaching staff is working to enhance their own lessons by developing new ideas to enthuse pupils even further. Pupils are encouraged to share ideas and experience with their peers as we recognise pupils enter the school with an array of experience and personal interests in this subject. We seek to utilise this in our teaching.

All pupils are taught one lesson per week of specialist ICT tuition. These lessons give pupils the opportunity to become proficient in specific software, from presentation software to 3D modeling and simulation applications. The aim is to develop pupils' key skills, which can then be applied in other curricular subjects. The activities they are engaged in, tend to be open-ended to promote independent thinking and learning skills, a variety of tasks require team collaboration.
