Mathematics
Mathematics is one of the core subjects and, as such, must be taught to everyone. Year 6 pupils have a one-hour lesson every day (this is known as the numeracy strategy) and Year 7 and 8 pupils have three, one-hour lessons each week. Although the content of what we teach (and the expected outcomes) are clearly laid down by the government, how we deliver and teach these objectives are definitely up to us.
Pupils of all abilities will learn if they are interested and enthusiastic about a subject. To this end, we try to make Maths lessons stimulating and engaging. We aim to teach using a variety of different styles and techniques; whole class lessons, small group work, problem solving activities, individual work and investigations (with the presentation of findings being an important element of the objectives) are all strategies used to make learning more enjoyable. The use of Electronic Whiteboards mean we can 'tap' into many interactive lessons and demonstrations.
Mental Arithmetic skills are vital and so pupils must learn table and table facts, they must develop key strategies to process numbers and facts efficiently, but they must also ensure that they are still able to 'think' creatively in order to solve problems. By delivering high quality maths lessons we give every pupils (no matter what their ability), the opportunity to develop these skills. We encourage pupils to take a pride in their work. Above all, we hope they will enjoy the journey. We do!
