The Year Seven Residential Visit to Wales.
For the last six years, Year Seven pupils have visited North Wales for their residential visit in June.
Staying at Conwy, Snowdon Ranger or Bangor Youth Hostels, the group have explored the three medieval castles built by Edward 1, Beaumaris, Conwy and Caernarfon. Projects are done on castles before we go so that they know what to look for. They make sketches of barbicans, portcullises, towers, drawbridges, moats, wells and murder holes, and then design their own castle selecting the features that they want to build.
The week also includes a visit to Plas Newydd, the home of the Marquis of Anglesey where we look at the work of the famous artist, Rex Whistler. The group then take a cruise along the Menai Strait and visit the Britannia Bridge. The commentary given by the captain is entertaining and educational!
Other visits include The Greenwood Centre, The Welsh Slate Museum at Llanberis and Penrhyn Castle at Bangor where before touring the house, the children dress up as servants and find out about life "under the stairs" a hundred years ago.
A popular visit for many is to the ice-cream shop in Beddgelert where there is a staggering choice of flavours.
This is a most enjoyable and never-to-be-forgotten week!
East Barnby
East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre is one of several run by North Yorkshire LEA and the Year 8 Outdoor Pursuits Week has been based there for many years.
The centre is situated near the historic port of Whitby where the North York Moors National Park meets the Heritage coast and and is housed in a former RAF radar station. The dormitories are modernised units, comfortable and centrally heated, with modern washing, showering and toilet facilities and with access to drying rooms. The main building includes dining room, common rooms, games room, library facilities and a shop.
Outdoor clothing and equipment are provided to enable a wide range of activities to be successfully and safely conducted in all kinds of weather and minibus transport to activity locations is provided.
The centre offers a wide range of programmes including canoeing, downhill skiing, environmental studies, field studies, gorge walking, hill walking, kayaking, off road cycling, orienteering,, problem solving, rock climbing, sailing and wind surfing and more. Throughout many activities, individual and team responsibilities are stressed and safety is always very high on the agenda.
East Barnby offers a fantastic opportunity to sample a variety of activities and we know that some students, and staff, subsequently take their newly discovered interests further. Students return tired but exhilarated, having gained new skills, faced fresh challenges and succeeded in ways they would never have thought possible. For our staff, it can be extremely rewarding to see the way that some students respond and develop.
Why East Barnby? We know the staff and they know us. We like to take students to East Barnby because we know the staff are experts in their field, extremely well trained, friendly and receptive and very aware of matters relating to student safety and welfare. The East Barnby team enjoys having students from Ingleton Middle School and staff have said they feel our students can be relied upon to act responsibly and to respond positively to challenges.
