July 2010 Newsletter
Dear Parents
Thank you for your support over the past twelve months. The
school has been a hive of activity all year to which you have given of
your time, energy and financial contributions, thank you. We wish
you a very pleasant summer holiday break, but in particular every
success to those pupils leaving us this month to continue their
education in another institution.
This year we also say farewell to two members of staff namely Mr Lackey
and Miss Shackleton who are retiring. They are both long standing
members of the school community serving 35 and 21 years
respectively. Mr Lackey has worked tirelessly in the Design &
Technology and Art departments. Miss Shackleton has led the RE
and PSHCEE departments and up until two years ago was also a highly
valued member of the senior management team. We wish to give our thanks
to both Mr Lackey and Miss Shackleton for their dedication, loyalty and
commitment to IMS. Have a happy and long retirement.
As staff leave replacements arrive so it is with pleasure that we give
a warm welcome to Mrs S. Keith who takes over the RE department in
September.
At the beginning of the summer holidays we are redecorating the school
classrooms and canteen, so please do not be surprised if you notice
workmen on site.
Sports Day
This year our Sports Day is on Monday 19th July starting at 1.20pm
until 3.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come and support.
Swimming Gala
Friday 23rd July, the last day of term, is the day of our Swimming Gala
at Ingleton Swimming Pool, starting at 9.30am. All the pupils
have been swimming with school for the last half term, so this is the
time to put all those lessons in to practice. We have had some
very wet lessons (not just in the water) and walks to the pool so
hopefully the sun will shine for us on the day of the Gala.
Again, please come along and cheer on your children.
After the Swimming Gala, for the last afternoon in school, between
1.45pm and 3.30pm all pupils will be in teams moving around a circuit
of track and field athletic activities to complete our House
Competitions for the year.
Craven Schools Athletics Championships
Year 7 & 8 teams competed at Settle in the 'Craven District
Athletics Competition'. Those winning first and second place
qualified for the 'Harrogate & Craven Finals' at Cleckheaton.
Unfortunately our teams were depleted due to the French trip clashing
with the athletics date. However, seven pupils qualified and
competed well at Cleckheaton. Congratulations to all athletes and
particularly to the year 7 qualifiers:- Declan Warburton - 1500m,
Sophie Thornton - Shot Put, Ben Gait - Triple Jump, Sam Bolton - 200m
& High Jump, Harriet Lodge - High Jump, Tristan Ward - Discuss,
Lottie Stephens - High Jump. A special congratulations goes to
Sam Bolton who won the High Jump to become 'Under 12 Harrogate and
Craven High Jump Champion'.
Y6 Football
Two teams took part in the annual 'Craven 7-a-side Football Tournament'
at Sandylands in Skipton on July 2nd. Both played very well with
one team being knocked out in the semi-finals on penalties in extra
time!
Adventure Service Challenge
Over the past year some year 8
pupils have been working towards the Adventure Service Challenge Award.
The activates included cycling awareness, first aid, food technology
(preparing a two course meal), map reading and a walk around Stocks
Reservoir, Tent Building and Orienteering. Here is a recount of
their 8 mile walk around Stocks Reservoir on Tuesday 6th
June;
The first place we came across was a bird hive looking across the lake,
we then carried on walking into the woodland. Eventually we came to a
cafe and had an early lunch. We carried on to the edge of the lake,
across the bridges, through more forests and finally back to the car
park. After that we all went orienteering in little groups and it was
fun. We all enjoyed the day and we have no regrets of joining
ASC. We all stayed on after school for ACS for 1 hour for
our training, every Monday. It is a great experience! We have
learnt many skills and all of them will be handy for us in the
future. I recommend that if anyone has the chance they should
join.
Potato Growing Competition Results.
![]() |
We had fun growing the potatoes and learnt a great deal about how much watering is required! Some classes didn't tend their crops very well and their potatoes suffered as a result. We ate the fruit of our labours over a few lunch times and everyone agreed that home grown potatoes are so much more tasty than shop bought. The winning class was 8J, who had a bumper crop in one bag making up the weight. Well done to all you budding gardeners out there. |
1940's weekend
Once again a group of our pupils did us proud at Ingleton's 1940's
weekend. The sun was shining as a group of our year 6 & 7
girls danced to 40's swing music in the village square. The girls
worked hard to learn the routine themselves, with a little help from
Miss Shackleton, as Elaine was unable to come into school as often as
she had in previous years. They were then followed by Jack Haigh
giving an accomplished solo performance of some well known wartime
tunes on his accordian. All received rapturous applause and were
thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience.
International News
Well done to all those pupils who took part in the Lefèvre
project. It was a huge challenge to which our youngsters responded
brilliantly. The contact weeks in both England and France were
extremely successful and the memories will last a lifetime. We are
already in the early stages of planning next year's Exchange programme
which will take place in the summer term.
Thanks to the families who hosted our nine guests from Finland at the
end of June, The Finnish youngsters had a wonderful time and were
really impressed with the hospitality shown to them. We hope to
further develop this link in the next few years.
We have been successful in our application for funding from the British
Council for a fourth Comenius project. This time we will be working
with schools in Finland, Spain, Norway and Sicily on a two year project
entitled 'Media and Young Europeans'. If anyone has any
connections with the media / film industry and think they could provide
us with some support or ideas, please let Mrs Butcher know. We will be
concentrating on European film and filming techniques in Year 1(2010 -
2011) and then looking in more detail at media influence, both positive
and negative in Year 2 (2011 - 2012).
Alongside this success, our application for a Comenius assistant has
also had a positive result. From September to December, Daniela
Palmarini from Italy will be joining our staff. She speaks Italian,
Spanish, French and English and will work both in lesson and enrichment
time with our youngsters.
We will be holding our annual International Art Exhibition from the
28th September to the 8th October. We have already had work from
Rwanda, New Zealand, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Finland, India, France,
Nigeria, Indonesia, Ukraine, Trinidad and Tobago, Italy, Argentina
................ and some local schools. (I need to check the others -
can't remember). Please make a note in your diary and spread the word.
We would like to share this very special occasion with as many people
as possible.
Ingleton Gala
This year Ingleton Gala is being held on Saturday 17th July, this is
always a great day out enjoyed by all who attend. The PTFA are
once again running a coconut shy so come along and support us, you
might win!!
