The School
Our school was opened in 1930 by the West Riding County
Council as a secondary school and it is because of the foresight and
educational philosophy of that county that we benefit from wonderful
provision. The classrooms are large and the envy of those with less
generous accommodation. It was built to replace the old national
school, originally at the top of Back Gate, which many people in the
village still remember.
Originally, the school housed more than 500 secondary pupils taking
students from Kirkby Lonsdale to Hellifield and at least half as many
primary children. Today things couldn't be more different. There are
approximately 160 pupils and the atmosphere is one of purposeful calm.
Education in the area was reorganised in the mid nineteen seventies and
in 1977 there were established two middle schools and a high school at
Settle all to be fed by village primary schools. It was intended by
this process to provide the most appropriate form of education to all
young people of all abilities and in this aim, it has achieved
resounding success.
We have excellent specialist facilities for all curriculum
areas. Computers in every classroom and a computer suite with
teaching and learning facilities second to none, music room, art room,
food technology room, resistant materials workshop, science laboratory,
gymnasium and library.
Within the county, the schools in this area are known as the North
Craven family of schools. This description reflects the nature of the
relationship between the schools. The primary schools work together in
two groups according to area and the middle schools have co-operated
closely in developing shared courses and aims. The primary-middle and
middle-college liaison is thorough in order to ensure the efficient and
enthusiastic continuation of your child's educational career.
The school is a coeducational, comprehensive middle school for young
people between 10 and 13 years of age. All children from the villages
of Burton in Lonsdale, High Bentham, Low Bentham, Clapham, Ingleton and
the surrounding areas are able to attend. Because the relationships
between the schools are so certain and we are not burdened with the
complexities of a variety of upper school provision, we are able to
provide a level of continuous care that is especially
supportive of your child.
There are three-year groups in the school and each year group is
divided into two, three or four classes. Classes are small, on average
under twenty-four, and so we are able to offer a very high level of
pupil support.
The accommodation is bright and airy and a secure, productive
atmosphere is engendered by frequent contact between pupils and their
form teachers particularly in a pupil's first year at the school. We
try to create an atmosphere as close to that of a family as can be
achieved outside the home. The school gardens and playing fields are
mature and as well as providing excellent recreational and sports
facilities have an important role in bringing about a calm and
purposeful working atmosphere.
