READI [ Rotary Education About Drugs Initiative ]

In the spring term in PSHCE, Year 6 study a unit of work entitled 'Drug Education'. This involves looking at the influence of alcohol, tobacco, solvents, illegal drugs and medicines. It includes information, facts, statistics but is also covers attitudes and decision-making.

For the last three years we have been fortunate to receive funding for the visit of a theatre company to help us in this work. The funding has come from Skipton Rotary Club and latterly through the Craven Crime Reduction Partnership [ via David Uffindall - North Yorkshire Drug Education Consultant ]. Figment Theatre company present 'I wannabe' followed by workshops. The theme is 'the future affected by today's decisions' e.g. a hopeful footballer who takes up smoking and is kicked off the team, thwarting his ambitions to play as a professional. It looks at peer pressure, the ability to say no, working out the consequences and knowing where to gain true information.

A 'celebratory event' for parents is prepared. Our Year 6 plus the Year 6 from Settle Middle school join together to show work completed - e.g. drama, dance, raps, artwork, power point presentations and songs.

Drugs - a rap.

Some drugs, they are addictive
But they also can be prescriptive.
Bad drugs are cocaine and heroin.
Good drugs are medicines and aspirin.
Cannabis and crack are illegal.
Lots of pills make you feel feeble.
You can pick drugs that you take
If you're wrong then it's your mistake !
You can make decisions to live or die
But after taking bad drugs you'll be saying bye, bye !

Year 6 have been working on Drug Education as part of P.S.H.C.E. To help with this they watched a drama performance by Figment Theatre Company. The play was called 'I Wanna Be' The focus was ambitions which have been spoilt by wrong decisions such as tobacco, alcohol and solvents.

The actors led pupils in a workshop and in a 'detective mystery' to solve an unexplained event. It was excellent. Year 6 entered the workshop and mystery with enthusiasm and they were held spellbound by the play. Following that, Year 6 prepared their own work as a 'presentation evening' to parents and guests. It included posters, dance, drama, monologues, adverts, raps and sections of information. Pupils from Settle Middle School have been doing similar work and joined us on that evening. Well done Year 6 and thanks to Skipton Rotary for sponsoring the READI project again this year.
