Quarry Project

After being approached by a lecturer of Creative Arts at Leeds University, we agreed to take part in a three month project about quarries, stones and rocks.

A year six class visited Ingleton Quarry in January 2005, and then each Monday, a musician came into school to work with them on an interesting composition using the sights and sounds of a quarry. Using a variety of musical instruments as well as pieces of stone, the pupils rehearsed the music and subsequently performed the composition to parents.

During the same term, all year six pupils worked on projects about stone in our environment. We examined the features of limestone scenery, looked at the building of dry-stone walls and found out about how rocks are made.

The projects involved research, report writing, drawing, sketching and puzzle solving and formed an excellent display for parents' night.

This project allowed a number of teachers to work together in a collaborative way. Work was done in Humanities, Art, English, Technology and Music and helped children to realise that knowledge is not compartmentalised.
