IMS v Catterall Hall

On Monday the 13th March IMS football teams set off to Catteral Hall, which is a big, private boarding school with hundreds of pupils.

They were divided in to seven a side A and B team which consisted of Sam Hutchinson, Liam Hartley-Wright, Lawrence Read, Ben Lammas, Ben O’Hagen, Jake Telford, Shaun Earl in the A team.

In the B team there was Thomas Whitaker, Stephen Frankland, Frank Shepherd, Jonny Green, Dec Murray, Matthew Fretwell and Adam Jeffery.

In the same event Settle Middle were meant to turn up but unfortunately they couldn't make it.

Catteral had three teams A B and C. The A team (IMS) played the C and B teams and they had clear wins with loads of goals and some skilful passing but unfortunately they lost to the A team 1-0.

The B team didn't have so much luck they won against the C team but lost to the other teams. Overall a good result.

IMS v Ripon College

Ingleton Middle's year 8 football team recently played Ripon College in a cup game. Ingleton got a-by-through the last round and they were looking to get through to the next round.

Ingleton started strong, yet conceded an early goal, Ingleton fought back with an equaliser scored by Sam Hutchinson, a srappy goal in the muddy goalmouth; Ripon scored again but Ingleton fought back and scored another goal through Ben O'Hagen, a smart goal to make it 2-2. But disater struck just before half-time; an own goal for Ingleton made it 2-3 to Ripon at half-time.

The second half started steady before Ripon grabbed a crucial goal, Ingleton had to now make up two goals, they kept strong though, Shaun Earl scoring a great one-on-one to make it 3-4; Ingleton thought they then had a chance, but again disater struck, Ripon scored a fifth goal, a lucky goal due to one of the Ingleton defenders slipping on the greasy surface! But Ingleton kept their heads high and tapped in a fourth goal to make it 4-5 to Ripon, Shaun Earl with a great cross hitting the post and Thomas Whitaker tapping the ball in the net.In the dying minutes Ingleton missed several great chances. 4-5 to Ripon College was the final score, a fanatastic performance by Ingleton, who probably deserved more.

Fell Running Talent

As we all know Matthew Fretwell is a cross country runner for the school but he also does fell running along with his sister, Amy. On an average, his races are 1.2 miles long, they start with a long ascent and then a quick fast descent.

We asked Matthew some questions about his running and he said, 'My dad used to run when he was young. Once, when I was at the Ingleton gala I saw the mountain race and it was at that point that I decided to start running. At the moment I'm running for Settle Running Club but I'm not looking at this as a career just a Sunday hobby.'

My favourite runner, who I look up to, is Paula Radcliffe because she didn't do that well when she was young, and look at her now. That just shows you how you can improve with time.

I enjoy running most of the time, it's a great feeling to win - a real buzz, but sometimes it can be really hard work. One of my first races was in Kendal, I was first at the start and then I went the wrong way and finished in second place.

Matthew is currently racing in the Kendal Winter League 2005 these are some of his results.

Race Position Time(minutes)
Fairmile Fell 2nd 9.15
Fairbank Fell 1st 9.17
Barbon Fell 1st 7.38
Birkrigg Common 3rd 8.51
Scout Scar Rough 5th 10.10
Whitestone Fell 1st 8.12

Sam Hutchinson has also been running for the school and as an individual he won the Yorkshire Cross Country Championship and the under 15 North Yorkshire Championship. He then ran in the North England Championship finishing 4th.

Then he advanced onto the English national championships finishing 13th in that run. His most recent run was the UK Inter-Counties Championship where he finished 16th.

His next run will be the National School's Championships where he will be running for the under 15's North Yorkshire team at Norwich and after that it's on to track running.

The Inter form competition is between all the different classes of the school. The classes form a team to play in matches against the other classes.
