A message from 'down under' by former pupil Phil Buckley

Phil Buckley and family, 24 Morrell Way, Armadale, Western Australia 6112

A big hello to all the students and staff at the middle school. One of my earliest memories is moving to the new primary school from the middle school our teacher was Miss North (deceased) who was really nice and we all had to carry something from our old class to our new school. We did more than one trip I think.

A few years later when I went to middle school, the new gym was built. My teachers were Mrs Bolger, Mr Surridge and Mr Daley. Our friends were Paul Chapman, Robert Simpson, Terry and Andrea Joel and heaps of other great kids Edward Barge, Gary and Neil Capstick they were great days for a kid.

Seeing photos and reading about the school on the website has really got me reminiscing. Good luck to everyone at the school. Our kids are middle school aged too they attend Kelmscott primary, we don't have a middle school, primary goes from years 1-7.

Well bye then, feel free to send a return if you have the time.

Interview with former pupil of IMS, Andrew Dawson

05cu4_12_1 How many years is it since you started at IMS? 31 and a half years.

How has the school changed since you were taught here? When I was there it was a secondary school, 11-16. We had one half of the school and the primary kids had the other, we also didn’t have the gym.

Are there any teachers still working at the school who were teaching while you were here? Mr. Lackey started in my last year.

Do you think the school has improved? Yes. There are better facilities, the gym, the lab has been improved. There is more room because there are only three year groups and there is a better atmosphere.

Is the uniform the same? No. We had to wear ties and long-sleeved shirts.

Which was your old classroom and is it still here? My 1st classroom was the library as the current music room was the library. (I think!)

How many years did you spend at the school? I spent five years there.

What job did you want to do when you left school? I wanted to be a farmer.

Is that what you did or are doing now? Yes it is.

What was your favourite lesson? Geography and woodwork.

What was your least favourite lesson? Maths or Science.

Did you ever get into big trouble? No!!

Who was your favourite teacher? Mr. Humphreys, who taught woodwork and was also the deputy head.

What memory sticks out in your mind of IMS? Nothing particularly, only that it was a lot larger than my primary school.

by Emma Dawson.

Interview with former pupil of IMS, John Armstrong - a family friend and neighbour.

05cu4_12_2 When did you attend Ingleton Middle School? 1982-1985.

What is your first memory of the school? Lots of glass, and square shape of the school.

What were your favourite and worst subjects and why? P.E - I found it easy and I didn’t have to think much. French/Maths - I had little interest in these subjects and found them hard to understand.

Are any of your teachers still at the school? Yes- Mr Lackey.

Do you remember going on any school trips, if so where to? I remember a day trip to Hawes.

Did you play any sport for the school? Yes, I did football, cricket and cross country.

Were you well behaved at school or did you ever get into trouble? I once made a dinner lady cry and I was in trouble more than I should have been.

Did you get homework and if so, how much per night? Yes-1 hour's work on average.

Do you still keep in touch with anyone you went to school with? Only people who still live in Bentham really.

Interview with former pupil of IMS, Claire Atherton

05cu4_13_1 When did you attend Ingleton Middle School? 1997-2000

What do you remember of your first day there? My first day was a little frightening actually! I had just moved here from Liverpool and although Ingleton Middle was new to us all, I didn’t know anyone, whereas everyone else had their old mates. I was in Miss Shackleton’s class and she asked Holly Dixon to show me to the cloakroom. I sat with a group from Bentham and we were soon having a laugh. I remember laughing at the farmers in our class because I had never met any before!

What was your favourite lesson and are you still studying it now? My favourite lesson was History. I loved learning about the past and with Mr Leeming as our teacher we couldn’t help but be in stitches every lesson. (Although he did tend to start repeating his stories after a while) Unfortunately High School was a bit different and I stopped taking History 3 years ago. I am currently studying A Level Biology, Sports Studies, Sociology, English Literature and General Studies.

Apart from lessons, did you join in anything such as sport or plays? I did lots of sports at school. I was in the hockey, rounders, football and athletics teams. I loved sport (although I hated running round the tip wearing knicker shorts!) I did a couple of plays but I can’t remember what they were. I remember having to interview Kieran Spencer while he was dressed as Marilyn Monroe! It was very funny - the worrying thing is, he still does stuff like that!

Do you still keep in touch with the people you went to school with? Yes, I still go to college with many of them. Me and Vicky Coggins are still best friends and have been since year 6. Plus I’m still really great friends with Anna Wilding, Rosy Halstead, Sam Knowles, Kenny MacFarlane and Esther Berry.

Do you have any particularly memorable moments from Ingleton Middle School? One not so nice one that the teachers should remember. It was very funny really... I was playing rounders and dived to 4th base to stump the batter out. (I wouldn’t have been so bothered but it was Vicky so I had to try and get her out) As I dived she swung the bat to hit the post but missed and hit me round the head instead. I got her on the way to the floor though, my hand swung up and hit her in the face and we bumped into each other. After regaining consciousness we lay on the food tech floor and then on a camp bed in Mr Leeming’s office before going off to the hospital. It’s funny looking back and I’d like to set the record straight - I definitely got Vicky out!

Did you have any teachers who are no longer at the school? Mr McSherry taught maths, Miss Coupe (Mrs Teesdale) taught PE (and made us have showers) and Mr Eady taught us with help from "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy"

What do you remember about any teachers? Mr Leeming warning us about falling down the loo, about not leaving the tops off his "Vanessas" or messing up his trolley! Also learning the great tip of how you can drink the 50th pint of milk from the factory if you’re a milkman and nobody will ever know!

When you attended the school, what activities or trips could you take part in? I went on lots of trips including East Barnby and the Lakes but the trip I remember most was to Northumberland. The food was rubbish but the rest of it was good. We stayed in a real castle and found a starfish and a beached seal.

What did you like about the school? I liked the close community feel to the school. We were like a big family when we were there and my mates and me had a great laugh.
